A lot of people have reblogged this because of some argument about veganism. but I’d like to point out that more animals are subjected to cruelty than just the cute puppies and kitties and bunnies. Exotics like snakes and lizards and tarantulas are not only abused and neglected as well, but many people don’t even care because they see them as ‘lesser’ animals not worthy of love or even basic respect. Exotic pet lovers struggle with ignorant and insensitive people who would belittle them and talk about committing violent acts against their beloved companions to their face. Many pet stores are full of sick and dying reptiles, amphibians and arachnids, left to suffer until they die because the employees simply don’t care about their well-being. Exotics are stigmatized, depicted in media as the animal of choice for “creepy” people and disgruntled, sadistic bullies. Tarantulas most significantly, as cartoons such as Rugrats and Total Drama island have introduced tarantulas and had them smashed as jokes. I can honestly say that I’ve never seen one positive portrayal of tarantula ownership on television.

So, how about this? Reblog if you’re against cruelty against ALL animals. Not just the cute ones.

I’ve said it before…I’m against cruelty. But we need to define the line of what is cruelty and what is not with our exotics. When we do that, people will start caring more and people that aren’t specialized in care of our beautiful exotic pets will have better chances of being rescued. We need to define the ‘standard’ care, period. To make it less confusing for new owners, and so pet shops can’t blame the terrible care on ignorance.

TL;DR…but I skimmed it, and I have a story for you guys. My friend had a pet snake that she let sleep curled up beside her in bed every night for years and years cuz they were BEST friends. But one morning, instead of being all curled up it was straight as an arrow beside her. She thought he was sick so she took him to the vet, and the vet said “he’s measuring to see if he’s big enough to eat you.” I’m not sure what all this means, except that I don’t want a pet snake whether it’s abused or not. that is fucking scary.

Fear mongering like that is the reason why exotic pet lovers have such a problem.
